The Best Road Trips in the North - Starting in Darlington

winding road through a valley
We’re passionate about cars here at Vasstech Darlington, and we’ve found the best way to celebrate our vehicles is to take them out on a road trip.

We’re lucky enough that the area surrounding our Darlington garage has some incredible views, but for those of you who may live further afield or want to explore beyond County Durham, we’ve compiled our favourite areas for road trips based in the North.

Plan ahead

First things first, if you’re heading out on a road trip, you’re going to do some planning. While this can sound like a chore, it’s really a great way to get excited for what’s going to be a fantastic trip.
You’ll need to plan where to stay overnight, how many stops you want to make, and even curating the perfect road trip playlist, but one of the best things to do would be to make sure you don’t fall at the first hurdle. This means making sure your mode of transport isn’t going to let you down.

Our friendly mechanics at our Darlington car garage can give your vehicle a once over to give you peace of mind before you head out on your road trip.

Lake District

Via the A67 & A685 to Bowness-on-Windermere – approx. 1hr 30m
Inspiring poets, novelists and painters for centuries, whilst we can’t promise you’ll return from a road trip to the Lakes a best selling author, one thing we can promise are spectacular views. One thing’s for sure, the Lake District is a place of extraordinary natural beauty. Boasting not only England’s largest lake (Windermere), England’s deepest lake (Wastwater), but also Scafell Pike, England’s highest peak.

Unless you’re James Bond, our garages in Darlington don’t recommend taking your cars onto the water or up Scafell Pike, but we do recommend finding a place to stop, so you can get out and enjoy the views.

Yorkshire

Via B6160 to Kettlewell – approx. 1hr 20m
Via A66 & A171 to Whitby – approx. 1hr 20m
Windswept, majestic and full of rolling hills, the Yorkshire moors are a must-see. Whether you’re exploring the heavily heathered moorland or exploring the scenic coastline, you’re almost guaranteed a warm welcome wherever you go. So be sure to include stops in traditional pubs and take the time to enjoy walks across in the four beautiful counties that make up Yorkshire.
Criss-crossed with dry stone walls and abundant in sheep and smooth roads, there’s so much to Yorkshire it’s hard to know where to start, so decide early how long you want to go for and plan accordingly!

North Wales

Via A1(M) to Snowdonia National Park – approx. 4hr
A bit of an outlier on our list, due to not being in England, but no less beautiful than any of the others. While slightly further away than anywhere else on the list, a drive through Snowdonia’s national park makes it all worth it. From high peaks to glorious waterfalls and crisp, almost glacial lakes, driving through Northern Wales can almost feel like embarking on a Scandinavian road trip, especially if you head out in the winter.

One you’ll definitely want to make sure your vehicle is prepared for and may require a look over from our mechanics in Darlington; it’s still incredibly accessible and a trip you’ll be glad you took.
