The best of this year’s Geneva Motor Show

    Geneva Motor show 2018

Motor Shows are held across the world throughout the year. However, nothing compares to the prestige of the Geneva Motor Show. At this ten day long event, global car brands are invited to showcase their latest innovations in the automobile industry to the world’s press. At this exhibition, the more extravagant, the better!

This year, the show has focussed on the future of driving, shedding some light on the current enigma that is autonomous driving. Currently, car brands have unfortunately only introduced concept cars for this futuristic movement, leaving us with the present fascination in the automobile industry, electric vehicles (EV).

Car brands have truly exceeded expectations this year, unveiling inspired innovation as well as announcing the integration of electric powered driving in our favourite car models. To represent the evolution of cars, we have listed the top highlights from the Geneva Motor Show for the VAG group.

As a complete surprise to the Geneva Motor Show attendees, VW announced the Vizzion, a premium-class fully electric saloon. Despite not going into commercial production until 2022, it’s difficult not to be excited about the features this car equips. The Vizzion has a range of 335 miles, more than any current and concept EV currently has, part-autonomous driving, and augmented reality featuring as practical as well as passenger entertainment purposes. VW hopes that by 2030, this model will make the steering wheel and pedals completely obsolete, and become fully autonomous.

As with VW, Audi introduced its fully Electric Vehicle at the Geneva Motor Show. The E-Tron is currently in the prototype phase, despite Audi stating that the car will be available for consumers ahead of VW in 2019. The E-Tron’s USP is its technology which allows it to be fully charged in just 30 minutes, the quickest charging time announced at the Geneva Motor Show.

However, Audi drew more buzz from the debut of its redesigned A6. The model hasn’t been subjected to a redesign in seven years, and its body and engine combination of the A4, A8 and A7, making this model the supreme in the fleet.

Seat is hoping to follow in the footsteps of other car brands that have successfully impressed the European market, with its 296bhp Leon Cupra estate. The car’s power is applied via an all four-wheel drive system, an approach that is common with leading hot hatches manufactures, and has proven successful with European drivers. The Leon Cupra features impressive copper alloy wheels and aerodynamic characteristics made from carbon fibre. Internally, the car is embellished with futuristic technology, but the most significant of novelties being the digital cockpit.

Skoda has been competing to become one of the leading car manufacturers for design, and at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, the brand introduced the Vision X, a prime example of the company’s design direction. With tightening regulations on CO2, this model conforms to the EU’s new lower emissions standards, producing only 90 grams of CO2 per kilometre. Skoda intends to eventually replace its current fleet of SUVs; the Karoq and Kodiaq, with the Vision X. The Vision X’s hybrid system features a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine, and combined with its sleek aerodynamic design along with its advance infotainment features, makes this new model of Skoda, ‘simply clever’.
